Mobil Usability ”There’s an old story about the person who wished his computer were as easy to use as his telephone. That wish has now come true, since I no longer know how to use my telephone.”

Mobil vs. PC 1/3 Mobilitet –Skiftende vs. stabile omgivelser Type af forbindelse –Svag/usikker vs. Stærk/sikker Interaktionsform –Sekventiel interaktion vs. direkte manipulation

Mobil vs. PC 2/3 Inputmuligheder –12-18 knapper vs. tastatur & mus Størrelse af skærm –176 x 220 pixels vs. 17”, 19”, 21” Størrelse af memory og hastighed –Meget begrænset vs. 1+Gb Antal applikationer på samme tid –1-2 stk. vs. multitasking

Mobil vs. PC 3/3 Surf vs. Hunt –Hovedet under armen vs. specifik opgaveløsning Flat-rate vs. Pay Per Minute –Mere fokus på forbrugt tid / større krav til indhold Privat vs. delvis offentlig –Man køber sjældent computeren efter dens features og design

Mobil vs. PC

When Good Things Happen To Bad Products Produkter kan have elendig usablity men alligevel sælge meget Produkter kan have fantastisk usability og sælge elendigt …kan man indkredse dette?

Kiro’s opdeling af usability Must-have: Forbindelse, batteritid, god skærm More-is-better: God navigation, ergonomisk design, taktil feedback Attractive usability: Bedre navigation, flere muligheder for personalisering, lækkert design, status i ejerskab.

Modeller Alcatel Motorola Nokia ’92 ’94 ’04 ’97 ’98 ’97 ’98 ’00 ’04 ’03

Resultater: Oversigt

Hvilke andre faktorer kan have spillet ind?

Don Norman ”It's an upside down, U-Shaped function. Usability of the first phones was not particularly good. When Nokia entered the market, they dramatically enhanced usability by devising a standardized menu scheme […]” “…but phones today are harder to use than they were in their best years. But still simpler than that first brick, despite having many more functions.”

Eric Reiss “I think overall the usability has actually decreased. […] today’s phones are overloaded with functionality [..] - menu structures are becoming absurdly complex.“ ”[…] In fact, I’d find my current phone much more usable if the screen was 1/3 smaller and the keyboard was 1/3 bigger.” “Mobile phones have not replaced PDAs and PDAs are still lousy phones.” ” Summa summarum, manufactures are trying to squeeze all the functionality and connectivity of a computer into a very small package.”

Steve Krug “I think some of the most important changes haven't been in what we're used to thinking of as the focus of usability - the user interface. Rather, it's been in things that have just made mobile phones generally more useful: Making them smaller, increasing battery life, understandable billing plans, and better reception in wider coverage areas. But all of that was accomplished at least seven or eight years ago...” ”Since then, it seems like the phone makers have gotten sucked into the syndrome of feature wars: Trying to pile on features to produce some semblance of differentiation.”

En lille overraskelse “Anders, I think your results will have a lot of publicity potential both commercially and academically. I think it warrants a book, and I would be happy to put you in touch with publishers. I'd be very happy to write the foreword to such a book, should you want my assistance in that capacity. The relevance of my contribution would be both my teams work on "Media Download Usability" and my book, with which you are already familiar.“ Scott Weiss, forfatter til ”Handheld Usability”
