burning crosses outside the homes of Klan enemies is a terrorist tactic that goes back to October 16, 1915, when "members of a Georgia lynch mob, the Knights of Mary Phagan … lit a giant cross atop Stone Mountain," Ga., according to The Ku Klux Klan: An Encyclopedia. Today, a cross is burned about once a week as a tactic of intimidation, classically on the lawn of an interracial couple. In fact, cross-burnings are so clearly a tactic of terror that many communities across America have outlawed the practice except on private property with the owner's consent.

Checkliste-metoden Komparativ kildeanalyse
26
Checkliste-metoden En række kriterier med tilhørende spørgsmål
27
Typiske kriterier Kan ophavet identificeres? Ophavets kvalifikationer?
Udgivende institution? Kontaktadresse? Meninger eller facts? Partsindlæg? Reklame/sponsorindflydelse? Kildehenvisninger/litteraturhenvis-ninger? Kvalitetskontrol?
28
Typiske kriterier Dækning? (dybde-bredde)
Relevante, annoterede lænker til andre sider? Korrekt information? Stavefejl og sjusk? Ufærdige sektioner? Opdatering og vedligeholdelse regelmæssigt? Datoer for oprettelse/opdatering? Døde lænker?

Checkliste-metoden ”a mechanical and algorithmic way of evaluation that is at odds with the higher-level judgment and intuition that we presumably seek to cultivate as part of critical thinking” Marc Meola (2004) Chucking the checklist: A contextual approach to teaching undergraduates web-site evaluation. Portal – Libraries and the Academy, 4(3):

Checkliste-metoden ”promotes the idea that students who proceed down the list and successfully check off the questions can mechanically arrive at a determination of quality, in the same way that by following a recipe you can produce a cake...

Checkliste-metoden ... yet good cooking, like good research, is more than simply following a recipe; it requires interpretation, experience, practice, and a healthy amount of creativity” Marc Meola (2004) Chucking the checklist: A contextual approach to teaching undergraduates web-site evaluation Portal – Libraries and the Academy, 4(3):

Komparativ kildeanalyse
Without having a standard of quality to use as a reference point, we have no scale by which to judge whether one item is better or worse than another. Verifikation Tommelfingerregler:
Gør kun brug af verificeret information Verificér oplysninger i forskellige kilder og gå opad i autoritetshierakiet
45
Autoritetshieraki I historiefaget: Førstehåndskilder Andenhåndskilder
I faglitteraturen: Afhandlingslitteratur Oversigtslitteratur

Konklusion 1/2 Internettet er fantastisk! Men informationerne vi finder på nettet skal bruges med omtanke. Vi kan til en vis grad checke informationer ved hjælp af de såkaldte checklister, men de kan ikke stå alene.
51
Konklusion 2/2 Vi bør altid dobbeltchecke vigtige informationer.
Så vidt det er muligt bør vigtige informationer dobbeltcheckes på et højere autoritetsniveau.
