As many physical processes also fire growths exponentially. A fire travels through four different phases: Early phase: a glass of water is sufficient to extinguish it. In this phase only little smoke is generated which consists mostly of invisible aerosols. Smoldering phase: with the help of a fire extinguisher or similar means it is possible to extinguish such a fire. In this phase dense smoke may be produced. Flaming fire: An open flaming fire needs to be fought by the fire brigade. Time pressure is enormous since this phase goes over in the Total fire: Via the flashover major parts of the building are attained by the fire. In most cases the fire section will be lost. Therefore, fire brigade concentrates on the protection of adjoining buildings and fire sections. The flashover is the event responsible for the transition from flaming fire to total fire. It is the explosion-like spreading of the fire that happens exactly at the time where all the previously generated flammable gases and vapors ignite and carry on the fire to all rooms already attained by the flue gas generated in the earlier fire development phases. Thanks to this graph it is also clear that an early detection is of advantage. In any case intervention needs to be early enough to prevent the flashover. A difficult issue is that the smoldering phase may be of completely differing duration: Fires generated by flammable liquids do not have any smoldering phase. But there exist also fires where smoldering fires may last for hours and days before a flaming fire is produced. Consequently, detection and intervention depend from each other. There are a lot of different means to restrict fire spreading. Among others architectural measures may restrict fire spreading and thereby prolong intervention time. But most of these options are costly. Earliest possible detection with simultaneous avoidance of false alarms is the simplest possibility to allow more time for intervention
