Jens Kirk Dept. of Culture and Global Studies Tony Harrison, ”A Cold Coming” (1991) I saw the charred Iraqi lean towards me from the bomb-blasted screen His windscreen wiper like a pen ready to write down thoughts for men, His windscreen wiper like a quill he’s reaching for to make his will. I saw the charred Iraqi lean like someone made of plasticine As though he’d stopped to ask the way and this is what I heard him say: ”Don’t be afraid I’ve picked on you for this exclusive interview Isn’t it your sort of poet’s task to find words for this frightening mask? Jens Kirk Dept. of Culture and Global Studies JRR Tolkien The Two Towers (1954) […] Aragorn and Gimli slept fitfully, and whenever they awoke they saw Legolas standing beside them, or walking to and fro, singing softly to himself in his own tongue […] So the night passed. Together they watched the dawn grow slowly in the sky, now bare and cloudless, until at last the sunrise came. […] Ahead and eastward they saw the windy uplands of the Wold of Rohan that they had already glimpsed many days ago from the Great River. North-westward stalked the dark forest of Fangorn; still ten leagues away stood its shadowy eaves, and its further slopes faded into the distant blue. Beyond there glimmered far away, as if floating on a grey cloud, the white head of tall Methedras, the last peak of the Misty Mountains. Out of the forest the Entwash flowed to meet them, its stream now swift and narrow, and its banks deepcloven. (Ch. Two. The Riders of Rohan)

Jens Kirk Dept. of Culture and Global Studies On Context Move him into the sun - Gently its touch awoke him once, At home, whispering of fields unsown. Always it woke him, even in France, Until this morning and this snow. If anything might rouse him now The kind old sun will know. Think how it wakes the seeds, - Woke, once, the clays of a cold star. Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides, Full-nerved, - still warm, - too hard to stir? Was it for this the clay grew tall? - O what made fatuous sunbeams toil To break earth's sleep at all?
